  • WiiWare Highlights: A Passion for Puzzlers

    04/08/2009

WiiWare offers you the chance to download exciting new games straight to Wii in minutes. These titles are created by both well-known publishers and fresh, new talent who now have a platform to show the world their creativity! With the recent announcement of a new storage solution for Wii, the sky’s the limit when it comes to downloading new games to play and we’ve taken a close look at some of the stars on the horizon.

Puzzling is one of the most popular genres on Wii and this week we’re shining a light on two very different, but equally exciting titles that require a little brain power as well as sharp reflexes.

Always look on the bright side of life

LIT is at heart a puzzle game, but also sits firmly in the horror/action genre. You take on the role of Jake - a teenager who’s trapped at school and has to find his way out to safety. You find your way out by uncovering light sources – by breaking a window, for example, and avoiding the dark.

Throughout the game Jake is in touch with his trapped girlfriend, Rachael, and successfully picking up all her phone calls means you can unlock her as a character at the end. Adam Tierney from WayForward reveals: “Once you unlock her as a playable character, you can play through the entire game as Rachael and then you can hear both sides of the conversation”. LIT promises to offer a dark experience in more ways than one…

    A Colourful Conundrum

At first glance, ColorZ seems a fairly straightforward puzzler. But appearances can be deceiving – this game has innovative depth. Using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, the idea is to clear levels by matching coloured balls, or UFOs.

After you’ve grasped the basics, you can start to combine colours to produce new UFOs, taking the complexity up a notch. Perhaps the most fun way to play it is with other people – three players can jump in together and co-operation is essential. “If everyone plays solo, you’re sure to die. You are obligated to say to each other ‘Hey, come on green player, come with me. I’m red and we need to become yellow to pass this microbe. It’s fun because you share the lives, so if one player loses the lives, you get pretty angry at him”, says Romain Streichemberger from developers Exkee.
