Enter The Matrix

System: Nintendo GameCube Release date: 15/05/2003

There have been many games made from movies in the past, but Enter the Matrix is that little bit different. Developed alongside the two Matrix sequels, and featuring a storyline that weaves in and out of the films' plot, it's almost like having an extra Matrix movie on your Nintendo GameCube.

Enter the Matrix doesn't feature the film's main characters such as Neo or Morpheus, but instead puts you in control of Niobe and Ghost - two new characters introduced in Matrix Reloaded. Intermixing real movie footage with game graphics, each mission sees you 'jacking in' to the Matrix and attempting to bring down the computer-controlled regime that threatens to wipe out humanity.

The game mostly consists of a third-person action style, as Niobe or Ghost run, jump and shoot their way through a variety of locations in search of a secret item that must not fall into enemy hands. Enter the Matrix, like the new movies, also features driving sections where you get the chance to speed along freeways doing things even a stunt driver wouldn't dream of. Plus, you get the chance to pilot a hovercraft in the 'real world' and escape attacks by Sentinels.

Like the movies, whenever your character is in the Matrix itself, they can use their reality-bending powers to their advantage. Luckily for us mere mortals, jumping upside down while firing off slow-motion bullets is simply a matter of holding the L button, allowing you to enter 'Focus' mode. But you only have a limited supply of Focus power. Use it all up and you must wait for your power bar to fill up again before more slow-motion carnage can ensue.

To give away too much of the plot would no doubt spoil the experience, as the game is intended to be the 'story within the story' of the movies. But, with a plot written by Matrix creators Larry and Andy Wachowski, suffice to say there will be enough twists, turns, bangs and blasts as the Matrix movies themselves.
