Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL - Sound and Microphone Troubleshooting
When it comes to sound and microphone issues, it is often helpful to remove any headphones you have inserted into the system.
What type of problem you are experiencing?

Sound:
- No volume or sound is faint through speakers
- Speakers sound fine but no sound through headphones
- Sound through only one speaker or one side of headphones
- Speakers continue to play when headphones are inserted
- Sound "pops," "buzzes," is scratchy, etc.
- Can't turn off "shutter" sound when taking pictures with Nintendo DSi Camera
- All other sound problems

Microphone:
- Microphone does not properly respond
- Remove any headphones or anything else that might be inserted into the headphone port on the Nintendo DSi.
- Adjust the volume of the Nintendo DSi system (how to).
- If you are experiencing sound issues with one particular game, it maybe a setting in the game. Consult the instruction manual for the game you are playing.
- Make sure headphone jack is clicked in as far as it can go into the headphone port of the Nintendo DSi.
- Try another set of headphones. If the new headphones work, then there was a problem with the previous set.
- If you are experiencing this problem only with headphones, try another pair of headphones.
- If the microphone works fine during the test, make sure the game you are playing supports the microphone feature. Check the game's manual for more information.
- If the microphone does not work during the test, then your Nintendo DSi system will need to be repaired. Click here for repair information.
Sound
No volume or sound is faint through speakers
If you are not able to hear the sound through the speaker, or it is very faint, try the following:
If you are still experiencing no or very low sound from the Nintendo DSi then your system will need to be repaired. Click here for repair information.
Speakers sound fine but no sound through headphones
If you can hear sound just fine through the built-in speakers on the Nintendo DSi, but cannot hear any sound through headphones, please review the following:
If you have tried multiple sets of headphones and still cannot get any sound when headphones are inserted, then it appears your Nintendo DSi system will need to be repaired. Click here for repair information.
Sound through only one speaker or one side of headphones
If you have tried multiple sets of headphones or hear sound out of just one speaker on the Nintendo DSi system, then it appears your Nintendo DSi system will need to be repaired. Click here for repair information.
Speakers continue to play when headphones are inserted
If you can hear sound out of the speakers even with headphones fully-inserted into the Nintendo DSi headphone port, then your system will need to be repaired. Click here for repair information.
Sound "pops," "buzzes," is scratchy, etc
This is a normal feature of the Nintendo DSi when the volume is below 30% or so. It is a function of the way the system was designed and there is no need for repair of your system.
If you have the volume turned up more than 30% and you still hear strange buzzing, popping or other unusual sounds, then it appears your system will need to be repaired. Click here for repair information.
Can't turn off "shutter" sound when taking pictures with Nintendo DSi Camera
The "shutter" sound affect when taking pictures with the Nintendo DSi Camera cannot be turned off. This is an intentional feature of the Nintendo DSi system.

Microphone

Make sure there isn't a headset inserted into the headphone port, then perform a Microphone test to verify whether the microphone is functioning.
