What Sort of Information Do You Need?

  • Important Notes (Please Read Before Proceeding)

    • It is strongly recommended that you do not use your copy of Nintendogs in more than one Nintendo DS, or change the time on your Nintendo DS. Doing either can disorientate your dog and will prevent you from being able to go on walks, participate in competitions, or teach your dog tricks, for the rest of the day.
    • Many issues and questions can be answered by viewing the books found in the game's "Supplies" list, under the "Care" menu. To access the books:
      1. While in the game, tap the "Supplies" icon with the Stylus.
      2. Tap "Care."
      3. Scroll down the list of options to reach different books (Dog Care, Dog Training, Bark Mode, Disc Competition, Agility Trial, and Obedience Trial), and tap the Stylus on the name of the book you would like to view. This will pull up a set of instructions and information regarding the topic you have chosen.

    • Before you can Save the game, go out, or use supplies, you will need to complete a tutorial that teaches how voice commands work. This must be completed before anything else can be done in Nintendogs. Dogs have differing personalities, so these steps may take longer for some dogs. For additional information and help, you may also want to check out the "Training Session" section of www.nintendogs.com.

  • Tips for Getting Started

    1. Buying your first puppy
Go to the Kennel, choose "Buy," and pick which breed and specific dog you want. If you do not like the three choices you are given, go back one screen by pressing the red arrow, and choose the breed again. You will have three different pups to choose from.
    2. Make your dog comfortable
Touch the lower screen to advance past the title screen. Touch the Whistle Icon (looks like a dog sniffing a hand.) Once the dog comes to the lower touch screen, pet your dog using the stylus for about a minute until you get the message that your dog feels better. Continue to pet the dog until prompted to give your dog a name.
    3. Name your dog
You will see a text box that says it is time to name the puppy, and you will hear an audio example of dog names (Lucky, Maxwell, Daisy). Advance past this screen, then tap the green bar that says "Begin Audio Input." Be sure that you are in a quiet area. Background noise can interfere with naming the dog. Hold the Nintendo DS about 6 inches away and pronounce the name the same way each time. Use the same voice inflection you will use to call your dog. A message will appear that states "He/She heard you." This message repeats until the dog learns his or her name. You will see a confirmation message when the dog learns its name. You will then be prompted to make note of the dog's name and a keyboard will appear that you can use to write out the dog's name.
    4. Practice calling your dog
Call your dog using the same voice inflection that was used to name the dog. When you call your dog correctly, the dog will bark and come to you. Reinforce this behavior by petting the dog. Do this several times until prompted to teach the dog to sit.
    5. Teach your dog to sit
Touch the Whistle Icon, call your dog, and rub its head using the stylus. Quickly slide the stylus down the screen and the dog will sit. Touch the training icon in the upper-right corner of the screen (it looks like a light bulb). Give a verbal command for sit. Pronounce the command the same way each time; any words can be used ("sit down" seems to work better than "sit"). Repeat this several times until your dog learns the command. You will see a text message when your dog learns the command.
    6. Practice calling your dog and giving the "Sit" Command
Call your dog using the same voice inflection that was used to name the dog. Give the sit command using the same words and voice inflection used when teaching the sit command. After successfully completing this task, the tutorial is complete and you can save the game and access the Home screen options.

  • Tips for Communicating with your Nintendog (Getting Him or Her to Understand and Obey)

Puppies can be a handful, and getting them to listen to you and learn new commands can be tricky sometimes. Use these tips when trying to communicate with your Nintendog.

    • Make sure you're in a quiet area when talking to your dog.
    • Use the same voice inflection each time.
    • Keep the mic 6 inches away when speaking.
    • Try adjusting the microphone sensitivity option. (This is not available until after you train your dog to sit.)
    • Use the dog's name often, otherwise it won't recognize it as well.
    • When your puppy does respond when called, pet it to reward it.
    • Take good care of the dog (check the status screen often).
    • Don't use single-syllable words as commands, as these are more difficult for the game to understand. (Instead of "Sit," use "Sit Down".)
    • Make sure to have your dog perform all the commands he/she knows often. This will help them remember the commands.
    • When the light bulb appears after your dog understands the command, drag it to the dog's mouth to feed it a treat.
    • Some breeds and personalities get nervous when performing. These dogs need extra time practicing before a competition, but they can do it.
    • Because of the game comparing sound files, it will be very difficult to get a dog to respond to another trainer. Some breeds and personalities don't respond well to other trainers, either.
