Persona 5 Royal launched for the Nintendo Switch™ system a couple months ago, and it’s now being joined by two other JRPG classics in their own right: Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. All three games are standalone stories so don’t worry if you’re not caught up—each of these games offers a variety of memorable characters, intricate storylines, and, well, Personas!
Here’s a bit of info on each:
Persona 3 Portable
A teenager who was orphaned as a young child returns to the city of their childhood. Shortly after transferring to Gekkoukan High School, the protagonist is attacked by Shadows—creatures that feed on the minds of their victims. When all hope seemed lost, they awaken their Persona, Orpheus, and discover a special ability that is only shared with a select group of other students.
What follows is a story about the Dark Hour—a hidden time that exists between one day and the next, swarming with Shadows. Join the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES) to confront this evil threat!
Persona 4 Golden
Inaba—a quiet town in rural Japan sets the scene for budding adolescence in Persona 4 Golden.
This coming-of-age story takes the protagonist and his friends on a journey kickstarted by a chain of serial murders. Explore meeting kindred spirits, feelings of belonging, and even confronting the darker sides of oneself. Persona 4 Golden is all about the meaningful bonds and experiences shared together with friends.
Persona 5 Royal
After a traumatic incident, the protagonist is forced to transfer to a high school in Tokyo. There, he has a strange dream which will change his life forever. Now, with the goal of “rehabilitation” looming overhead, he must save others from distorted desires by donning the mask of a Phantom Thief—a group of do-gooders who change hearts filled with corrupt desires and upheave the city (with a little bit of thieving).
