Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo

System: Nintendo 64 Release date: 23/03/2001

The same team that brought you Rogue Squadron strikes back, creating an action-packed game based on the storyline of Star Wars Episode I. This time, you get to control land-based vehicles as well as outer-atmospheric crafts as you struggle to save Naboo.Despite Queen Amidala's actions, her homeland is ravaged by the ruthless invasion of the corrupt Trade Federation. Just as the Queen escapes Theed to plead Naboo's case before the Galactic Senate on Coruscant, you gain control of Lt. Gavyn Sykes, a brave pilot in Naboo's Royal Security Forces. It is your mission to protect Naboo while Queen Amidala is away and form a resistance movement made up of smugglers, maverick pilots and your fellow Royal Security officers. Battle for Naboo launches an original storyline from this point, but at key moments the play intersects with important scenes from the film. In your struggle to save the planet from the depredations of the pitiless Trade Federation, you must master several vehicles, including the fast and agile N-1 starfighter, a stolen Trade Federation gunboat, a heavily armoured battle STAP and the powerful Gian speeder. In all Lt. Sykes will find himself in the cockpits of seven different vehicles. The co-developers at LucasArts and Factor 5 must have paid close attention to Qui-Gon Jinn's advice to "Feel, don't think. Use your instincts." - because the gameplay in Battle for Naboo feels great. If you helped Luke Skywalker take down the Empire in Rogue Squadron, then you know what to expect. Battle for Naboo features the same tight play control, which lets you fly freely through the air as you chase down the Trade Federation's droid starfighters, AATs and more. Unlike Rogue Squadron, in Battle for Naboo you have the option to change vehicles in mid-mission through special hangars located on the ground. Depending on what type of vehicle you opt to control, your mission objectives will vary slightly.A plan of pure attack may work for Darth Sidious and the Trade Federation, but Lt. Sykes is often too outnumbered to try to take out each and every enemy. Although your mission objectives will occasionally call for total annihilation of enemy forces, usually your orders are based on sabotage, reconnaissance and protecting convoys. There are 16 unique levels to complete, which range from the city streets of Theed to the dangerous peaks of snow-capped mountains. Since each vehicle has different strengths and weaknesses, there is room for plenty of variety. Depending on whether you're controlling a Naboo police cruiser or a Flash speeder, you'll find yourself in the middle of air-to-air, ground-to-ground, and air-to-ground battles."Now, be brave, and don't look back." This advice was given to young Anakin Skywalker by his mother Shmi, and it will serve you well if you decide to embark on LucasArts' superb N64 offering.
