The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

NINTENDO SWITCH

Getting started on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild An adventure all your own

Become Link, who has reawakened after 100 years, and explore the vast open world of Hyrule, survive in the wild, and embark on a quest to protect everything that matters.

Explore.

Link awakens after 100 years to find himself in the Shrine of Resurrection located on the Great Plateau surrounded by high cliffs.

Go anywhere

Hyrule Kingdom is a land of many different environments, from lush green forests to harsh, barren deserts and frigid snow-capped mountains. The adventure is wherever you are.

Link

PLAYER’S VOICE

I wanna see what's around that corner. I don't feel like fighting that enemy over there. I just want to climb higher and higher. I don't care about following roads, I'll just go straight to the goal. - Now I can do all of that.

PLAYER’S VOICE

It's usually a pain trying to climb up to high places in games. But it's surprisingly fun in Breath of the Wild. Things like trying to plan the route, how many Elixirs to carry, where to find the best views, and discovering new things are great.

Teen, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

There are different ways to get to places and solve problems, so it's fun trying to figure things out. It's great having the freedom to do pretty much whatever I want.

Teen, male

PLAYER’S VOICE

Making progress in this game is totally up to the player and whatever you feel like doing at the time. I'm pretty sure that no two players in the whole world play it in exactly the same way.

Play outside the box

There is no such thing as the "right way" to adventure here. Your decisions and actions determine your adventure.

PLAYER’S VOICE

Weapons never break. The good guy never loses. Heroes always act like heroes. That's what I used to think.

20s, male

PLAYER’S VOICE

Until now, Zelda games always had a linear storyline and specific steps to win. I was shocked that now you can go right after Ganon from the very beginning, you can start from anywhere or just do whatever you want.

Teen, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

There are even different ways to beat a Bokoblin now. You can charge them head on, launch bombs and arrows from far away, or even drop boulders and trees on them.

Teen, male

PLAYER’S VOICE

This is a total departure from other Legend of Zelda games and is full of surprises. You can climb cliffs, you can hunt, and weapons even break. I'm not exaggerating when I say you're 100% free to play this game however you want.

Survive.

As you explore the vast open world of Hyrule Kingdom, you will encounter a wide variety of monsters and wild creatures. For Link to survive, you will need to learn to defend yourself and even harvest food from them. Hone your fighting and survival skills in this never-ending adventure.

Take on powerful enemies

Hyrule is home to numerous monsters, from the diminutive to the towering. Some travel in packs and others stalk the shadows alone. Defeat them in an endless number of ways, from headlong charges to formulating a cunning plan making use of the terrain and tools. Even if an enemy crushes you the first time, as long as you keep fighting, you will learn the tricks and tactics to overcome even the fiercest foe.

Link

PLAYER’S VOICE

I made the trip to Hyrule Kingdom for the first time at age 67. At first, I could hardly even figure out how to get Link out of the Great Plateau Tower. But it was so rewarding the first time I beat a Guardian.

60s, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

It's so incredibly satisfying to figure some way out of a jam using whatever tools you have available! I still remember that time I stole an enemy's weapon and wiped out a mob of them against all odds.

20s, male

PLAYER’S VOICE

I can't believe how free you are in this game. Link can do everything. I can figure out how to beat any monster with just a little ingenuity. Well, at least that's what I thought until a Guardian attacked me. (Laughs)

Into the wild

Hyrule is home to endlessly lush vistas and glorious sunsets. But this untamed beauty is sometimes the very obstacle that Link must overcome. Rain can make mountain climbing treacherous, not to mention snuff out your precious source of light and heat.

PLAYER’S VOICE

One of the most interesting things is the effects of weather and terrain. Metal weapons and armor actually conduct lightning, and volcanoes burn up wooden objects. It's amazing.

20s, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

The wind effects are incredible. The way the grass sways, the leaves rustle, and your torch flickers. Or a gentle breeze pushing your raft, an updraft, or even Revali's Gale. I love it all.

Teenager

PLAYER’S VOICE

From temperatures so cold that even winter clothes don't help to zero-visibility blizzards, terrain so slippery that you can't climb, and getting hit by lightning. Honestly, the battle against mother nature is just as hard as fighting monsters.

20s, female

Doing what it takes to survive

Hyrule hides numerous secrets and hidden dangers, which may contain valuable tools and equipment. You may find that you need to seek them out in order to survive.

PLAYER’S VOICE

I was always getting distracted from the main quest because I'd stumble across so many interesting places. But that's just my play style. (Laughs)

30s, male

PLAYER’S VOICE

My map is now complete, but there are still a ton of places I haven’t checked out yet. My Link is probably more like an explorer than a hero because I'm constantly going off on tangents with him.

Teen, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

I know I'm supposed to be rescuing Princess Zelda, but I'm having too much fun exploring, gathering materials, and fighting enemies. I guess she'll just have to wait a little longer...

Protect.

Link awakens after 100 years of sleep with no memory of his past. As he progress through the adventure, he will meet many people and gradually restore his memories - including the vow he made to protect a certain someone.

Picking up the pieces of the past

Hyrule is home to four different tribes, each with a Champion, who once joined forces and faced Calamity Ganon together. By seeking them out and interacting with them, Link picks up the pieces of the past and learns about the events that took place 100 years ago.

Zelda

PLAYER’S VOICE

The Champions' feels. Zelda's feels. Link's feels. This game had lots of feels in it. I loved it.

20s, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

Mipha's story made me cry. It was a good thing my husband was out, because the tears were seriously flowing. That's the first time a game has ever made me cry. I wasn't expecting that.

20s, female

PLAYER’S VOICE

I've put 500 hours into this adventure. Despite this I still feel as though Link and I continue to grow together as people, meet friends during our adventures and at the end, even after all this time I still can't stop myself from crying everytime we finally rescue Zelda.
