Can the Wii U system play Wii games?

Yes. The Wii U console can play all Wii games. In addition, Wii Shop Channel is available on Wii U, so you can purchase digital Wii games and download them to your Wii U. The system does not support Wii titles or accessories that require the use of the Nintendo GameCube controller ports.

What Wii U accessories should I get?

Many Wii U games require a Wii Remote + Wii MotionPlus accessory or a Wii Remote Plus controller, as well as a Nunchuk controller (these also come in handy when playing Wii games on your Wii U console). Find out more on the accessories page.

Can I use Nintendo eShop funds on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems?

Yes. You can use the same funds on both systems if they are linked to the Nintendo eShop with the same Nintendo Network ID. Please visit this page for more information.

Does Wii U play DVD or Blu-Ray discs?

No. The Wii U console does not play DVDs or Blu-Ray discs, but Wii U offers access to video-on-demand services* such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and YouTube.

If I delete a game on my Wii U, will I be able to download it again?

Yes. On the system where you made the initial purchase, you can re-download a deleted game (as long as it's still available in the eShop) by going to your profile in the Nintendo eShop Menu and selecting My Downloads.

Will my Wii Remote controllers work with the Wii U system?

Yes. Wii Remote controllers are compatible with the Wii U console, but many Wii U games require a Wii Remote + Wii MotionPlus accessory or Wii Remote Plus controller. Please check game requirements to understand whether a Wii Remote Plus controller is required. Regular Wii Remote controllers can also be upgraded with a Wii MotionPlus accessory, available here.

Can I play a game on the Wii U GamePad and watch TV at the same time?

Yes. If the game or application supports off-TV play, you will be able to use the GamePad to play the game or application while also watching TV. Check the game or application manual for more information.

Where can I find out about new and upcoming games?

Head to the Nintendo eShop on your Wii U, where you'll find digital versions of new and classic games. Browse new releases or search for specific titles to purchase and download.

You can also learn about upcoming games on the Coming Soon page of the Game Store.

Can I transfer save data from my Wii to my Wii U?

Yes. Please visit our Support page for detailed instructions.
