Nintendo Switch 2 System Cannot Be Charged
Steps for when your Nintendo Switch 2 console does not charge or the battery level does not increase to full while the AC adapter is connected to the console or dock.
Before you start
You will need:
Your Nintendo Switch 2 console
A Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01(AU)) or another compatible AC adapter and cable
Access to a power socket
Remove your Nintendo Switch 2 console from the dock when completing the following troubleshooting steps.
What to do
Unplug the AC adapter from both the socket and the dock/console. Leave unplugged for 30 seconds to reset the AC adapter.
Hold down the POWER Button on the console for 20 seconds.
Release the POWER Button. This performs a forced shut-down on the console.
Plug the AC adapter back into the socket, then connect it directly to the console.
Try a different power socket in case there is an issue with the first one you tried.
For testing purposes, it's recommended that you plug the charger into a socket directly, rather than into a power strip.
Press the POWER Button once. The console should turn back on.
The charging icon is displayed on a blank screen
If the battery charge on the console is nearly depleted when the AC adapter is first plugged in, the screen will remain off and a charging indicator will momentarily be displayed in the top-left corner of the console screen.
Check that you're using the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter or another compatible AC adapter.
If you want to use an alternative charging solution, please consult the Nintendo Switch 2 console's power requirements, which can be found on the packaging and in the Important Information booklet, and ensure that you select a compatible AC adapter approved for use in your country.
Check the AC adapter for damage such as a frayed or split cord, loose connectors, kinks, etc. If damaged, the AC adapter will need to be replaced.
Charge the console for at least 15 to 30 minutes.
Press the POWER Button to turn it on.
Confirm that the console has the latest system update installed.
Situation not resolved
If the battery charging icon is not displayed or if the battery level does not reach 100% charged after several hours, there may be an issue with the AC adapter or charging ports.
Test the AC adapter in the other USB Type-C connector on the console. There is one on the top and one on the bottom of the console.
The other USB-C connector works
The Nintendo Switch 2 console will need to come in for assessment.
Unplug the AC adapter from your console.
Plug the AC adapter into another Nintendo product that uses USB-C, such as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller or the dock for your console.
Check to see if the other device charges (if testing on a dock, you may see the power light turn on for a moment when first plugging it in).
Does the AC adapter charge/power a different Nintendo device?
The Nintendo Switch 2 console will need to come in for assessment.
Check if you are using the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter or another compatible AC adapter.
A Nintendo Switch AC adapter can be used to charge the console directly, but cannot be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock for charging or using the console in TV mode.
If you want to use an alternative charging solution, please consult the Nintendo Switch 2 console's power requirements, which can be found on the packaging and in the Important Information booklet, and ensure that you select a compatible AC adapter approved for use in your country.
Check the AC adapter for damage. Damage can include a frayed or split cord, loose connectors, kinks, etc.
If any damage to the AC adapter is found, it will need to be replaced.
Use a different AC adapter to try to charge the console.
If you don't have a second AC adapter, the Nintendo Switch 2 console will need to come in for assessment.
If the issue is not resolved using another AC adapter, the Nintendo Switch 2 console will need to come in for assessment.
For testing purposes, be sure to include the AC adapter.
Check the USB-C connectors on the top and the bottom of the Nintendo Switch 2 console for damage, such as bent metal.
If any damage is found to a USB-C connector, the Nintendo Switch 2 console will need to be assessment.
