Applies To: Synced Wii Remotes - Cursor is not Displaying as it Should
What to Do:
There may be a problem with your Wii Remote or Sensor Bar. Let's check your Sensor Bar first.
- The Sensor Bar may have become unplugged from the Wii console, or is placed in a way that it is not visible to the Wii Remote. Verify the Sensor Bar's connection and placement. (How to)
- Inspect the Sensor Bar cord and look for any physical damage (sometimes caused by pets or vacuum cleaners). If it is damaged, you'll need to purchase a replacement through our Online Store.
- If the Sensor Bar is connected properly and does not appear damaged, verify that the Sensor Bar is working by using your digital camera (includes cell phone cameras). (How To)
Did you see lights on both ends of the Sensor Bar?
Applies To: Synced Wii Remotes - Cursor does not display or is erratic - Passed Sensor Bar camera test
Wii Remote status: Your Wii Remote is communicating with your Wii Console, but is not able to display a cursor.
What to Do:
If your Sensor Bar passed the camera infrared test, there might be an issue with your Wii Remote. Try these steps and if possible try another Wii Remote with your console.
- If you are using a Wii Remote Plus, try recalibrating. (How To)
- Check the Directional Sensor Functionality by holding the Wii Remote with the button side down. Without using much force, firmly tap the button side of the remote against the palm of your other hand. Doing this does not take a lot of force, so be sure not to tap the Wii Remote very hard.
- Verify that the Wii Remote is being used between 3 and 10 feet directly in front of the TV, and that nothing is blocking the infra-red sensor on the front of the Wii Remote (like if the Wii Remote Jacket is askew).
- If another Wii Remote is working properly, it appears the issue is with the first Wii Remote. Please click here for replacement options.
- If you are unable to try another Wii Remote, or neither Wii Remotes will work properly, please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.

What to Do:
Follow these steps to allow your Wii Remote to communicate (or "sync") with your Wii console.
- Unplug the power cord from the Wii console, and let it sit for at least a few seconds.
- Remove the battery cover from your Wii Remote.
- NOTE: Some Wii Remote models include a hole in the battery cover and a protrusion to push the SYNC. Button with (not available on all models).
- Plug the power cord back into the console and power it on.
- Press and release the SYNC button on your Wii Remote.
- The Wii Remote's lights will start flashing.
- While the Wii Remote lights flash, press and release the SYNC button on the Wii console.
The Wii Remote lights should go from flashing to one single solid light.
One light is solid:
- Yes, and the cursor is appearing fine
- No, or cursor is not displaying as it should (erratic, disappears, etc)
Now that your Wii Remote is synced (you see one single light), do you see the hand cursor on the Wii Menu, and if so, is it behaving correctly?
Lights still flash:
- If the lights still flash, repeat the steps with a fresh set of batteries.
- If fresh batteries do not help, there might be an issue with your Wii Remote or Wii console. Try the steps above using another Wii Remote.
- If another Wii Remote is working properly, it appears the issue is with the first Wii Remote. Please click here for replacement options.
- If you are unable to try another Wii Remote, or neither Wii Remote will sync, please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.

Point the Wii Remote at the television and move it around. Do you see the "hand" cursor on the Wii Menu, and if so, is it behaving correctly?
Situation:
- Wii Remote buttons are not responding or are responding incorrectly
Does this occur with one game specifically, or with all games?
Applies To: Wii – Occurs With One Game
Important Note!
- If the power button won't power the system off, make sure to hold it down for a few seconds.
What to Do:
- If you are using a Wii console with model number RVL 001, check the GameCube Controller sockets to see if anything is attached to the console. If an accessory has been left plugged in, the console may be looking for input from that accessory instead of from the Wii Remote or Classic Controller.

When troubleshooting the Wii Remote, follow these guidelines to ensure you have set up the system properly to have the optimal environment in which to use the Wii Remote:
- If any unlicensed products (Wii Remotes, rechargeable battery packs, etc.) are being used, replace them with the licensed version.
- Check to make sure the Sensor Bar cord is inserted into the back of the Wii console and the Sensor Bar is centered above or below your TV screen (more info).
- Make sure you are using fresh batteries in the Wii Remote.
- The Wii Remote Controller should be used between 3 to 10 feet from the TV.
- Make sure no objects are blocking the signals between the Sensor Bar, the Wii console, and the Wii Remote.
- Check for interference from infra-red light sources, such as candles, sunlight, fireplaces, and stoves.
- Radio frequency interference may cause the Wii Remote to work erratically. Check for wireless devices such as cordless phones, wireless computer keyboards or mice, or other similar devices, and move or turn them off.
Situation:
- Tilt problems – Wii Remote responds incorrectly, or not at all, when moved
- Character moves on its own when remote is still
What to do:
- Check the motion sensor functionality by holding the Wii Remote with the button side down. Without using much force, tap the button side of the remote against the palm of your other hand. Doing this does not take a lot of force, so be sure not to tap the Wii Remote very hard.
- Try placing the Wii Remote in a neutral position by resting it on a flat surface during game play to see if it still moves on its own.
Situation Not Resolved:
- If the character or cursor still tilts on its own, there is a problem with the Wii Remote and it will need to be repaired. Click here for replacement options.
Situation:
- The batteries don't last long or drain quickly
Important Note!
For more battery information, click here
What to do:
- A fresh set of alkaline batteries should last, depending on amount and type of use, up to 30 hours. This can vary greatly based on certain factors, such as Wii Remote Speaker Volume, Rumble, battery quality and age, and type of game being played.
- The Wii Remote should go into sleep mode if the console is turned off, if the console goes into Burn-In Reduction mode, or after five minutes of inactivity. This will conserve battery power.
- Ensure that you are not leaving the Wii Remote in a place where it can be powered on unintentionally (between the seat cushions of a couch, within reach of a young child, etc.).
Still Not Resolved:
If you still feel that the Wii Remote is draining batteries too fast, then it will need to be repaired. Click here for replacement options.
Situation:
- Buttons are sticky or stuck down
What to do:
- Try cleaning the buttons. (How To)
Situation Not Resolved:
- If the buttons are still sticky after cleaning, the Wii Remote will need to be replaced. Our experience shows that this type of problem is usually caused by physical damage and not covered under Nintendo's warranty. Replacement Wii Remotes can be purchased at retail stores that sell Nintendo products. For tips on purchasing Nintendo products, please click here.
Situation:
- "Crackling" or static noise from speaker
- No sound from speaker
What to do:
- Not all games use the Wii Remote's speaker. Check the game's instruction manual to verify whether the game uses the speaker.
- Use the HOME menu to adjust the Wii Remote's volume. (How To)
- If the batteries are changed too quickly, occasionally you might get a crackling noise or no sound from the Wii Remote's speaker. Take out the batteries, wait for one (1) minute, then re-insert.
- Wireless interference (RF) can, in rare cases, cause sound problems with the Wii Remote. Turn off or move away from any wireless devices, such as cordless phones, microwaves, etc.
Situation Not Resolved:
- If speaker still isn't working, there is likely a problem with the Wii Remote and it will need to be repaired. Please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.
Situation:
- The cursor is off center, jerky, erratic, disappears, does not respond properly, is upside down, etc.
- Cursor or character movement not responding properly
Do you have a Wii Remote or a Wii Remote Plus?
Applies To: Wii Remote
What to Do:
- Check the Directional Sensor Functionality by holding the Wii Remote with the button side down. Without using much force, firmly tap the button side of the remote against the palm of your other hand. Doing this does not take a lot of force, so be sure not to tap the Wii Remote very hard.
- Verify that the Wii Remote's pointer lens is free of obstructions and contamination (stickers, heavy smudges, etc.). The pointer lens is the tinted rectangle at the end of the Wii Remote.
- Verify that the Wii Remote is being used between 3 and 10 feet directly in front of the TV.
- Verify that the Wii Remote Jacket is securely in place on the Wii Remote. If the Wii Remote Jacket is askew, it might be partially blocking the infra-red sensor on the front of the Wii Remote.
- Try a new set of batteries. Occasionally weak batteries can cause this type of behavior.
- Resync the Wii Remote to the console.
- Verify correct setup of the Sensor Bar. (How To)
- Verify that there are no bright light sources, including sunlight, behind or near the TV, shining towards the remote or reflecting off the TV screen (check for reflective surfaces near the TV that may reflect light as well). Also avoid sources of infrared light in the gameplay area such as electric, propane or kerosene heaters, flames from fireplaces or candles, and stoves or other sources of heat.
- Check the cord on the Sensor Bar for any frayed wires or kinks, and verify that the Sensor Bar is free of obstructions. (Note: If there is any physical damage to the sensor bar, you will need to purchase a replacement.)
- Verify the Sensor Bar's Sensitivity Setting dots. (How To)
Situation not resolved:
If the Wii Remote is still not working correctly, there is likely a problem with the Wii Remote and it will need to be repaired. Click here for replacement options.
Applies To: Wii Remote Plus

Situation Not Resolved:
Situation:
- The console powers on and shows a black and white image on the television screen
- The console powers on and there is no image on the television
What to do:
- Determine whether the Standard AV Cables (packaged with the system) or the Component Cables (sold separately) are being used.
- AV Cables
- Ensure the yellow, red, and white cables are connected to the correct corresponding inputs on the TV. (How To)
- Try another set of inputs on the TV, or hooking the Wii console up to another TV.
- If the TV does not have the yellow, red and white inputs, it will most likely have component inputs which allow standard AV cable use. Try these AV hookup steps. (How To)
- Component Cables
- Ensure the red, blue and green video cables are connected to the correct corresponding inputs on the TV. (How To)
- Try another set of inputs on the TV, or hooking the Wii console up to another TV.
Still Not Resolved:
- If the television is continues to show a black and white image when powering on the Wii console, then the problem is likely with the system and it will need to be repaired. Please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.
Situation:
- Cannot locate the yellow Video Input
- Television appears to only use component cables
Important Note!
- Some newer TVs do not have the traditional "yellow" video input, known as an "AV" connection. Even without that input, you should be able to use the standard three-color Wii AV Cable that came with the system.
What to do:
- Look for "component" inputs on your TV. These connections have a row of five differently-colored inputs (green, blue, and red for video, white and red for audio). If you have more than one set of component inputs, it's the first set that generally works with standard AV cables. Look for a set that has a green input with yellow around it, or the word "video" just above or below it.
- Plug the yellow end of the Wii A/V cable into this green "Y" input. Plug the white end into the audio "L" and the red into the audio "R." Leave the blue and second red holes open.
- Turn on your Wii console and set your television to the input select being used.
- If you are seeing the image from the Wii in black and white, try the following to get the image in color:
- Cycle through your television's input channels (usually with the "Input Select" or "Source" button on your TV's remote control) to find the input select that has the image in color.
- If you're only finding the image in black and white, you may need to switch the setting of the input select from a component signal to a standard AV signal. This can be done by:
- An on screen menu option. This is often accessed by using the "Menu" button on the remote.
- A button on the remote that switches between the standard and component signals. These can be labeled such things as "AV" or "Video."

Note: Sharp Aquos Quattron (4-Color) TV:
Some models of Sharp Aquos Quattron televisions have a mini-plug (headphone jack) input for the standard AV cable hookup There are two ways to connect the Wii console to these TVs:
- Purchase an adapter which allows standard AV cables to be connected to the mini-plug (headphone jack) port on the back of the TV. This is typically available through the manufacturer's website.
- As an alternative, it is possible to purchase component cables for the Wii console.
Situation:
- The Input select doesn't work
- Unable to locate the correct input channel on the television
What to do:
- Check the hookup.
- The system may be plugged into an output.
- It might be connected to a different input than what is selected.
- Verify the device has inputs and not just outputs. Examples of devices that typically do not have inputs:
- Cable Boxes
- Satellite Receivers
- Digital Converter Boxes
- DVD players
- Video Cassette Players (VCP's)
- Laser Disc players
- The input may take multiple types of connections. The input may allow for component video or S-Video or standard AV, and will automatically detect which is connected. Verify that there aren't any additional cables connected to the same input.
- Using a universal remote may be the issue. Because inputs can vary from one device to another, universal remotes don't always change the input select properly. Ensure that you are using the original remote.
- If connected to a VCR, the VCR may be in the wrong mode and needs to be in VCR mode. Insert a tape and press play to ensure the VCR is on the correct mode.

Situation:
- The SD Card icon is not appearing on the Wii system's main menu
Information:
The SD Card Menu is accessed from the "SD Card" icon on the Wii menu for Wii consoles with Wii Menu Version 4.0 or higher. For more information on updating your Wii console's Menu, click here.
Situation:
- The response to the Wii Remote seems slowed or delayed. For example, when trying to move the cursor, the cursor doesn't move right away
What to do:
- If the Wii is connected to a DVR (such as TIVO) or Satellite System with built-in DVR, change the hookup so the Wii console is connecting directly to the TV or VCR, and not to the DVR device. DVR's intentionally create a slight delay in displaying the picture, which would appear as though you were getting a delayed reaction from your controller. This may also occur with some models of projection televisions.
- Try to locate a button or menu item on the television called "Game Mode" or something similar. Some televisions have a slight delay which can be resolved by selecting this option.
- Try adjusting the TV's refresh rate down to 60Hz.
- Remove any unlicensed accessories.
- This includes controller extension cables if using GameCube controllers.
- If the system has been tried on several televisions and there are no unlicensed accessories in use, try a different Wii Remote.
- If a different Wii Remote works, the original Wii Remote will need to be replaced. Please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.
Situation not Resolved:
If the system is still having a delayed reaction or has the same issue with multiple controllers, this indicates a problem with the system that will need a repair. To start the repair process, click here.

Still Not Resolved:
- If the system is still freezing during use, this indicates a problem with the system that will need a repair. Click here to begin the repair process.
Situation:
- The picture is shifted too far to the left or right
What to Do:
- Try adjusting the screen position. (How To)
- The TV may be set to a zoom setting. Check the TV manual and try adjusting the widescreen setting on the TV.
Situation Not Resolved:
- If adjusting the Screen Position and checking the TV widescreen settings did not solve the problem, then the problem is likely with the system and it will need to be repaired. To start the repair process, click here.
Situation:
- The frame rate becomes slow or irregular while playing a game
Information: Occasional slowdowns in a game's frame rate can occur from time-to-time and do not necessarily indicate an issue with the game or system.

- The Wii Balance Board will not power on, or the batteries are not giving power to the Balance Board
What to Do:
- Check for an unlicensed battery pack. If one is being used, try a fresh set of batteries instead.
- Even if new batteries have already been tried, try another set of fresh batteries, and verify that they're installed correctly. When replacing the batteries, wait at least a minute after removing the old batteries before replacing them with new batteries. (Click here for more info about batteries.)
If the Wii Balance Board is still experiencing power problems after trying new batteries and ensuring that they are inserted correctly, please click here for repair information.
Situation:
- The Wii Balance Board is not responding correctly to movement.
What to do:
- The Wii Balance Board will only communicate with the Wii Console if a compatible game is being used. It must also be synced to each game individually. Make sure that the game being played displays the following icon on its packaging:

- How often is the echo occurring?
- If the echo is intermittent, it's likely caused by either moving the Wii Speak microphone or moving around while talking (this could be caused on either end of the conversation). Each time the microphone is moved and each time a person moves around, the microphone will need to adjust its settings in relation to the people speaking, and this will cause an echo. The echo should go away after all microphones are stationary and all people using the microphones are no longer moving around.
- Check the location of the Wii Speak microphone.
- Check the audio setup.
- Check the internet connection.

- System & Accessories
- Games
- Internet Connection
- Wii Shop Channel
- All Other Channels
- System Settings
How to get service:
In order to find your best repair option, we need to find out exactly what kind of problem your system is experiencing. To do that, we ask that you first visit the troubleshooting section for Wii and select the issue you are experiencing. At the end of troubleshooting you will be presented with the best repair or replacement options available to you.
Warranty will be determined during the set up process for all systems.
Information:
What you need to do in the event you have a Wii accessory that must be replaced will depend on which company made the accessory. Please read the information below.
Nintendo can only offer repairs for accessories made by Nintendo.
How to tell who made the accessory:
- Check the accessory for any manufacturer information. Nintendo-made products, such as the AC Adapter or Wii Remote will often have the Nintendo logo and will feature a model number beginning with the letters RVL.
- Check the product packaging or manuals for any manufacturer names and contact information. Tip: if the product packaging states something to the affect: "Made for use with the Wii" it is likely an unlicensed product.
If you have a licensed or unlicensed product made by another company, you will need to contact the manufacturer.
If the product is manufactured by Nintendo, please use the following options:
- Physically damaged: Accessories that are physically-damaged are not covered under Nintendo's warranty (read full warranty text), and you will need to purchase a replacement. Many Wii accessories can be found in Nintendo's Online Store.
- Accessory came with the system: If the accessory came in the same box as the Wii system, it has a one-year manufacturer's warranty (which can be extended 90 days by registering your system). If your accessory is covered under the system warranty, please call our Consumer Service Department at 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available repair options (please have your Wii system's serial number handy). If the warranty has expired, you will need to purchase a replacement accessory. Many Wii accessories can be purchased in retail stores (click here for more information), or through Nintendo's Online Store.
- Accessory was purchased separately: If the accessory was sold separately, it has a 90-day manufacturer's warranty. If your Wii accessory is less than 90 days old, and you have a dated sales receipt, please call our Consumer Service department at 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available replacement options. If your Wii accessory is over 90 days old, you will need to purchase a replacement. Many Wii accessories can be purchased in retail stores (click here for more information), or through Nintendo's Online Store.
For warranty situations you must be able to provide the defective item and proof of purchase. Please check the warranty text to make sure you qualify for warranty coverage for your product.
Information:
What to do in the event you have a Wii or Nintendo GameCube game disc that needs replacement will depend on which company published the game. Nintendo can only offer repairs for games that are published by Nintendo (For example, Mario, Pokémon, Zelda, etc.). Many games available for Nintendo's systems are published by licensee companies.
There are two ways to determine who published your game:
- Check the plastic case that the game came in when you bought it. The publisher's logo will appear on the front in the bottom right corner.
- Find the game on Nintendo.com's Game Guide. You can search by name or system. Look for the "Publisher" name.
Who published your game?
Applies To: Published by a licensee company
- If the game is published by a licensee company, you will need to contact that company for repair/replacement options. Click here for a list of current licensee companies and their contact information.
Applies To: Published by Nintendo
- If the game is published by Nintendo, and was purchased new within the last 90 days (not previously-played or used), Nintendo will attempt to provide a replacement. You must be able to provide the game and proof of purchase, and the game must not show signs of physical damage. Please call 1 (800) 255-3700 for assistance.
- If the game is published by Nintendo and it was purchased more than 90 days ago, or you do not have a proof of purchase, we cannot offer a warranty repair. (This also includes games that were purchased used or that are physically damaged.) We recommend purchasing a replacement copy of the game at a retailer.
Nintendo offers replacement game discs for games that cannot be purchased by themselves (these are games that are included with the system or bundled with a required accessory). Our Online Store currently offers discounted replacement discs for: Wii Fit.
