TV screen is blank - power light is green or orange

If the power light is green or orange and your screen remains blank, follow these steps.

    1. Completely power down your system by pressing the power button for 10 seconds. If that doesn't work, unplug the AC Adapter from the Wii for a moment, then plug it back in.
    2. Make sure your Wii console has the most current Wii system menu. Download the latest update (how to), and then test your Wii console to determine if the problem has been resolved.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, or if you continue to experience this issue, your Wii console will need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.

Blank white or blank dark screen

  • Is this your first time hooking up the Wii console or have you moved it to another TV or VCR? If so, please click here to review our step-by-step connection guide. Our experience shows that the majority of these issues can be solved by double-checking your connection and finding the correct Input Select for your TV or VCR.
  • If you are certain the connection is correct, but the screen stays blank and you cannot turn the power off (the green or orange light stays on), click here for specific troubleshooting.
  • If you have verified the connection is correct, and are still receiving a blank white or blank dark screen when powering on your Wii console, then the problem is likely with the system and it will need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.

Display problems while playing Virtual Console games

If you are experiencing display issues (dim, blank or half-blank screen, ghosted image, etc.) with a Virtual Console game while using the Component Video Cable, please read the following:

Some Virtual Console games default to displaying 240 lines of video. Some HD TV's are unable to display a signal with only 240 lines. Try the steps below to set the Wii to output 480 lines of video, which may solve the problem:

    1. While on the Wii Channel Menu (main screen of the Wii), connect a Nunchuk to Wii Remote.
    2. Select the Virtual Console game from the Wii menu, then select "Start" to begin the game.
    3. When the game starts, press the Home button on the Wii Remote. (In many games, the music can be heard when the game starts.)
    4. Select "Operations Manual" from the Home menu.
    5. Press the Z + A + 2 Button simultaneously (the Z Button is on the Nunchuk). A sound will be heard if the button combination has been entered correctly.
    6. Close the Home menu. The game should now display correctly. Note: You will not have to do this the next time you play, as the Wii console will remember these settings.

If the Virtual Console game is still not displaying properly, but all other games work fine, please call 1-800-255-3700 so that we may assist you further.

    Picture is out of alignment

  • If the picture is shifted too far to the left or right, try adjusting the Screen Position. (Click here for instructions.)

    Picture is stretched

  • If the console is not set to the proper aspect ratio of the television, the screen will appear to be stretched. Try adjusting the Widescreen Settings on the Wii console to match the TV. Click here for instructions.

Noise (buzzing) coming from the Wii console

It is normal for some amount of noise to come from the Wii console, as there are various moving parts inside of the system. Additionally, the Wii console may make noises as it's reading discs, which may become louder at certain times. This is normal.

If the Wii console is making an especially loud noise (for example, so loud you can hear it over your TV), then your system may need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, or if you continue to experience this issue, your Wii console will need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.

      Frame rate is slow, irregular

    • Occasional slow downs in a game's frame rate can occur from time-to-time and do not necessarily indicate an issue with the game or system. However, if you are experiencing frequent slow downs in frame rate, please use the troubleshooting information below.

How many games are you having this issue with?

      • One particular game
        1. Check our list of specific games to see if there is a known issue with that particular title.
        2. Try cleaning the game disc using our recommended method and re-test to see if the situation has improved.

If after trying the above information you are still experiencing a frame rate issue with one only game disc, please click here for game disc replacement information.

      •

      • More than one game
        1. Try cleaning a few of the game discs using our recommended method and re-test to see if the situation has improved.

All other sound and video problems

  • Is this your first time hooking up the Wii console or have you moved it to another TV or VCR? If so, please click here to review our step-by-step connection guide. Our experience shows that the majority of these issues can be solved by double-checking your connection.
  • If you have verified that the hookup is okay, then the game may be the problem.

    • For audio issues, check our list of specific games to see if there is a known audio issue with that particular title.
    • For video issues, check our list of specific games to see if there is a known audio issue with that particular title.
    • Try navigating the Wii Menu and Mii Channel to verify if the problem persists on those screens as well. If the sound/video problems are not present on the Wii Menu or Mii Channel, there's likely a problem with the game. See Game Disc or Wii Shop Channel troubleshooting.
    • If the sound/video problems are present on the Wii Menu or Mii Channel, it is likely that the problem is with the Wii console itself. Please click here for repair options.
