Tips for best Wii Speak performance

(If you need more detailed set up instructions for Wii Speak, click here.)

To get the most enjoyment chatting with your Wii friends through Wii Speak, it is important to make sure you and each of your Wii friends have the best setup possible. Please review this page, and ask your Wii friends to visit support.nintendo.com/wiispeak so that they can ensure their playing environment is at its best.

Please Note: Games and other software that display the Wii Speak microphone icon (view) are designed to work specifically with the Wii Speak microphone accessory. Any other licenced or unlicenced microphones that are available are not compatible with these games. Additionally, the Wii Speak microphone will only work with these games and other software that display this icon.

    Wii Speak microphone placement:

  • The Wii Speak microphone should not be placed near speakers or on an electronic device, such as on top of the Wii console, a VCR, DVD, Tivo, etc. It is recommended that the Wii Speak microphone be placed on the top portion of the TV. (If a center channel speaker is placed on top of the TV, the speaker should not be used when using the Wii Speak microphone.)
  • There should be no items in front of any speakers that may reflect the sound back towards the microphone.
  • Do not hold Wii Speak when in use. (This prevents the noise filters from working properly.)
  •

    Audio settings:

  • Any type of digital audio conversion should be turned off. This includes surround sound, digital bass enhancers, "room" settings (i.e. concert hall, movie theater, etc.) or any other sound setting that alters the sound output.
  • The audio settings of the Wii system should be set to Mono or Stereo. This setting should match the type of audio played by the TV. (So the Wii system settings should be set to mono if a TV with mono-sound is being used, and to stereo if a TV with stereo sound is being used. It is recommended that a surround sound set-up not be used.)
  • Make sure the headphone mode in the game or channel is only set if headphones are being used.
  • Both the red and white audio plugs of your Wii should be used when in Stereo mode. If system settings are set to Mono, only the white audio cable is needed.
  •

    Internet connection:

    • A cable, DSL, or fiber optic internet connection should be used. Dial-up, satellite, cellular cards, etc. will not work.

    • To ensure maximum availability of bandwidth, avoid using any other devices connected to the internet while using Wii Speak.

    • If other wireless devices are being used while using Wii Speak (such as cordless phones, wireless headphones, etc.), try using the Wii Speak microphone when these devices are not being used.

    • The distance between a wireless router and the Wii console impacts the transmission of the wireless signal, which can impact the quality of the audio data being transmitted. Try keeping the distance between the two as short as possible.

    Other considerations:

    • Any Nintendo games or software designed to work with Wii Speak are only compatible with Wii Speak. Unlicensed microphones may produce poor quality sound or not work at all.
