Other Nintendo 64 Screen Problems

Important Note:

The following are normal occurrences and are not problems with your system:

  • Black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Some games are created in the Letter Box format, which shows a black bar along the top and/or bottom of the TV screen. This is a programmed feature, not a defect.

  • Freezing when a game is removed with the power on. Press RESET to correct the problem. Always turn your system OFF before removing Game Paks

  • For any other problems, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

  1. Make sure you are using only licensed accessories with your system.

For RF connections, we find that video problems occur most often during an RF switch hookup when an unlicensed RF switch and modulator set are used. Make sure your RF switch and modulator set are two different pieces and the name "Nintendo" is molded onto the RF switch and modulator. If your RF modulator is one piece or is black and it says "for use with Nintendo" it is an unlicensed product. Unlicensed products are not fully compatible with our systems and may not work correctly.

  2. Check all of the system connections to verify that they are firm and correct.

For AV connections, verify the hookup is correct, and remove the AV cables and reinsert them with a slight twisting motion to ensure a firm connection.

For RF connections make sure the channel switch on the TV and RF Modulator are set to the same channel (either CH3 orCH4).

  3. Slide the Power Switch on the Control Deck to the OFF position. Remove the Game Pak and re-load it, pressing firmly to make sure it is locked in place.

  4. Slide the Power Switch on the Control Deck to the ON position.

  5. Check under the Memory Expansion door (on the top of the control deck) to verify that the Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak is still inserted. If one is not inserted, slide the Power Switch to the OFF position, insert the Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak and slide the Power Switch to the ON position. Simply pressing reset will not solve the problem. You must turn the power off and then back on.

Additional steps for RF Switch/Modulator Connections

  1. Adjust the vertical or horizontal hold controls. This is helpful even if regular TV stations come in fine. If your TV has an automatic fine tuning control (called AFC or AFT), turn it OFF. Use the manual fine tuning dial to adjust the picture. If turning OFF the AFC/AFT causes your TV to display in black and white, then leave the AFC/AFT ON. Slide the Power Switch on the Control Deck to the ON position. While the control deck remains ON, turn the TV off for 10 second then back on again. This resets your AFC/AFT so that it will tune in the signal from the control deck.

  2. Move your control deck farther away from your TV. If the control deck is too close to the TV, the control deck may cause some interference.

If these steps do not resolve the symptoms you are experiencing with your system, it may be necessary to replace the system or accessory. For more information on what options are available, please click here.
