Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL - Screen Problems

If you are experiencing issues with your Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL system's screen(s), please use the links below for specific troubleshooting information that may resolve the problem you are experiencing. If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, repair options will be presented. If you cannot find your issue listed, select "All other screen problems" at the bottom of the list below.

 


 

Touch Screen not responding properly or at all to stylus

  1. Check the game's manual to see if there are alternative control settings that may work better for you. Many games feature several control settings -- some that may make using the stylus easier. There may also be settings that use the system's Control Pad and buttons only.
  2. If it happens on all games or on start up, you will need to recalibrate your touch screen.  Go here for detailed instructions on how to do this.

Touch Screen is dim, fuzzy, blurry, yellow, etc.
Due to the touch screen feature of the lower screen, an additional layer of touch-sensitive material is added. The top screen is not touch-sensitive, and can appear slightly brighter than the lower screen because it does not have this additional layer. Here are two things you can do to try and help increase the amount of light you see from the lower screen:

  • Try holding the system so that the lower screen is not at an angle, and you are able to look directly at it.
  • If you are using a screen protector, make sure that it is licensed by Nintendo. Unlicensed screen protectors may affect the visibility of the screen you are using it on. For more information on licensed products, please click here.
  • If the screen is very dark (hard to see in normal light), there could be a problem with the back light. Check the brightness setting to make sure the light is set to the desired brightness.

If after reviewing the information above and your system's Touch Screen still remains significantly darker than the top screen, your system will need to be repaired. Click here for more information.

 

 

 

 

Cracked or broken screen ("ink blotch")
If runny colors or blotchy colors permanently remain on the screen, even when the power is OFF, then the liquid crystal display (LCD) is cracked. In this situation, your system will need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.

 

 

 

 

Lines on the screen
If you see lines on either screen of your system during game play, then it is likely one or more of the components that create the image on the screen are damaged. This usually occurs if there has been an impact -- such as being dropped or hit -- to the system's screens, and it will need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.

Important Note: If you are seeing lines on the screen that slowly fade away after turning off the system, this is normal.

 

 

 

One or more screen is scrambled at start up and you cannot progress further
If by turning on your system and getting past the Health & Safety Precautions and the top screen becomes scrambled and you are not able to progress further, it appears your system needs to be repaired. Click here for more information.

 

 

 

 

White (or Other Color) Dot on the Screen (Pixel Issues)
With a small number of Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL screens, one or two dots on the screen may appear to be 'stuck' on a particular color, such as white or red, or the pixel may be black/off. This effect is caused when a particular pixel (the dots that make up the screen) is not working properly. Even with the high quality standards set by LCD manufacturers, you will find this situation is common in many LCD devices (PC monitors, televisions, cell phones, etc.), and is within LCD manufacturers' specifications.

It's important to understand that this issue will remain limited to the pixels you have already noticed. The problem will not get any worse and you should not expect to see the problem in any other areas of the screen.

We suggest you use your system for a few weeks to determine whether this interferes with your enjoyment of game play. If, after using your system for awhile, you feel that this tiny dot is too distracting, the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL do carry a one-year warranty. Back light does not turn on
Have you dimmed the screen brightness (more info)? Dimming the brightness setting will affect how bright the Back light appears and is likely the cause of this issue. Click here for information on adjusting screen brightness.

If adjusting the screen brightness does not resolve the issue, then it appears your system will need to be repaired. Please click here to begin the repair process.

 

 

 

 

Scratched screen
Due to the construction of the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL, it is not possible to replace the screen covers without special facilities and tools. If you would like to have either or both of the screen covers on your system replaced, the system will need to be sent in to Nintendo for repair.   • If you are having an issue with just one particular game, consult the manual for that game. Some games have unique features or settings that can be adjusted that may resolve the issue you are experiencing.
