Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL - Rechargeable Battery Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does the rechargeable battery last before it needs to be charged again?

Battery life largely depends upon the game being played and the screen brightness setting.

Fun Fact: The power light on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL will change from blue to red when the battery life is around 30%.

  • How long does it take to charge the battery?

The battery requires 2 to 3 hours of charging. You will know when it is fully charged when the orange charging light shuts off. It is okay to continue to play the system while it is charging, though the unit will take longer to charge.

  • Will I ever need to replace the rechargeable battery?

The battery will last for several years (or about 500 charges) before battery life starts dropping. If you experience problems with your battery, please try our power/battery troubleshooting.

  • Does the battery have to be totally depleted before I can charge it?

We recommend charging the battery pack completely before its first use, or after you have not used it for a long time (the battery should be recharged at least once every six months). It takes about four hours--with the unit turned off--to fully charge the battery.

Other than these two instances, you can recharge the battery pack at any time. The power light will change from blue to red when the battery life is around 30%.

Note: The unit should not be left uncharged for long periods of time. Leaving it uncharged for long periods (months) may shorten the battery life. As with all batteries, the charge will slowly dissipate if not re-charged, even if it's not turned on.

  • What type of battery is it?

The Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL use a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.

  • Can I play my Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL while I'm recharging the battery?

Yes, it is possible to play your system while the battery is recharging; however, this will cause the charging process to take longer than the typical four hours when the system is not being played at the same time.
